Cognitive Restructuring: Challenging Unhelpful Thinking

The classic thought record and the skill of evaluating, rather than suppressing, unhelpful thoughts.

Registration is through Eventbrite, run by Practical CBT, Professor McGhee's training organisation.

The session

From the model to your practice

  1. The model
    • Identifying common thinking styles (catastrophising, mind-reading, all-or-nothing thinking).
    • The structure of a thought record: situation, thought, evidence for and against, balanced alternative.
    • Common pitfalls: turning restructuring into forced positivity rather than balanced thinking.
  2. Your questions, live. This is the part a recording cannot give you.
  3. In practice, in Flutura
    • An interactive thought-record worksheet from the library, completed on a client's device.
    • How a therapist reviews a completed worksheet and the client's answers.
    • The AI-assisted note that turns a session discussing the thought record into an editable clinical note.

Learning outcomes

What you will leave with

  • A genuinely interactive alternative to the paper thought record most therapists already use.
  • How digital thought records reduce the 'forgotten homework' problem common in practice.
  • A template you can trial with clients immediately, in the app or adapted for your own use.

Who teaches it

Professor Patrick McGhee
